In this video, I show step by step how to set up a Windows VM on CentOS for gaming. This is the hardware I will be using in this tutorial:
Processor: Intel Core i5 10600K
Motherboard: MSI B460M PRO-VDH Wifi
Graphics: eVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB)
RAM: 64GB DDR4 Team Group
HDD/SSD: 2TB Crucial MX500 SSD
This is the software I will be using:
Host OS: CentOS 8
Guest OS: Windows 10 Pro
Virtualization: KVM/QEMU/libvirt and virt-manager
VirtIO drivers: https://github.com/virtio-win/virtio-win-pkg-scripts/blob/master/README.md#downloads

Commands to run on the host OS:
To get the topology of the CPU: cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/topology/thread_siblings_list | sort | uniq
Blurb to place at the end of GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX inside of /etc/default/grub: \”intel_iommu=on isolcpus=[thread list depending on topology of your CPU]\” (e.g. intel_iommu=on isolcpus=1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9,10,11)
To update GRUB: grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/centos/grub.cfg
To identify graphics card: lspci -nn
Blurb to add to /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf: \”options vfio-pci ids=[ids of the video and audio components of the graphics card]\” (e.g. options vfio-pci ids=10de:1c03,10de:10f1)
To create /etc/modules-load.d/vfio-pci.conf and add \”vfio-pci\” to it: echo ‘vfio-pci’ \u0026gt; /etc/modules-load.d/vfio-pci.conf
To check that IOMMU is successfully enabled: dmesg | grep -E \”DMAR|IOMMU\”
Look for \”DMAR: IOMMU enabled\”
To check that vfio-pci successfully added the graphic card: dmesg | grep -i vfio
Look for \”vfio_pci: add\”

Complete guide to install or update NVIDIA graphics drivers on Ubuntu and its derivatives system e.g Linux Mint, Elementary OS, KDE Neon, Zorin, or any Ubuntu based distributions. I’ve been using this without any issues e.g login loops, low graphics mode, freezing at boot screen, or any NVIDIA Linux related drama.

FYI, Ubuntu comes with the open source nouveau driver, which is included out of the box. However, this driver not properly support the graphics card’s functionality. In my experience, it perform worse.
And in a few cases, the system would not boot. If you are a gamer or need to work with 3D graphics, then you need to install NVIDIA proprietary driver to get better performance.
There are 3 ways to install latest GPU card driver. First, you can use graphical user interface by opening additional driver from the application launcher. The other way is done from the command line interface by adding Personal Package Archive (PPA), or install NVIDIA .run driver for Linux.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Installing wrong drivers may introduce an issue. As for which drivers to use, please head to https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us and check what they recommend.
If one of the listed drivers is already provided by the official repositories for your Ubuntu release, just install it, no need for a PPA. Otherwise, you may add this PPA and install from there.
SUPPORTED RELEASES AND VERSION
The drivers is available for 14.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS, 18.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS, 21.04, 21.10, 22.04 LTS at the moment. Bear in mind, the support will be dropped once any version of Ubuntu reach its EOL (End Of Life).

Just a really quick vid on how to disable and power off your Nvidia GPU if you don’t use it.
I’ve found that I get by just fine with my intel GPU since I don’t do much hardcore gaming, and my CPU does video editing just as well as the GPU does. So by doing this, you keep the power consumption lower, and it creates less heat. This example is on Manjaro, which will also work on Arch and Ubuntu as well as most other distros that use GRUB.
If you’re not using GRUB, you need to figure out how to add those options to your boot options.

Another Youtube Channel called SavvyNik has published a video that shows how to fix the \”screen tear\” as he calls it – those black lines that were flickering across the screen during the videos made from screen recordings made while using the Nvidia driver. The fix that SavvyNik suggests resulted in my glmark2 score dropping by about 40%, compared to running without the fix. Here we use the glmark2 graphics benchmark to see which performs better – the default X.Org Nouveau open source driver or the Nvidia 435 proprietary driver.
This test uses an Nvidia GT 1030 GPU with a Linux-based (Lubuntu 19.10) operating system.
